Description
Characteristics and Use
HYDROIL ESTERNO is an oil-resin-wax impregnating protective treatment for all untreated exterior wood surfaces, including decking, cladding, wooden structures, outdoor furniture, doors, and window frames.
HYDROIL ESTERNO:
- is a water-based, odourless, non-hazardous product that is easy to apply;
- is simple to use and dries quickly (30–60 minutes), allowing a complete treatment cycle to be finished within a few hours;
- helps prevent wood ageing and greying;
- provides excellent protection against water, stains, weathering, UV rays, and wear;
- enhances the natural colour of the wood, leaving a transparent, matte finish with a premium silky touch;
- is lightly pigmented to give the wood a warm tone while improving UV protection;
- can be easily tinted with IDROTONER (maximum concentration 10%; e.g. 1 kg of HYDROIL ESTERNO / 100 g of IDROTONER) to create customised transparent finishes that preserve the natural wood grain;
- has a low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content;
- is easy to maintain over time through routine cleaning with DETERCLEAN and the application of BARRIER, the anti-dirt and anti-weathering maintenance finishing wax, once or twice a year.
Do not apply to varnished or painted wood.
How to use
The product must be applied to clean, well-sanded, untreated wood surfaces. For maintenance of surfaces previously treated with HYDROIL ESTERNO, apply a fresh coat after cleaning and lightly sanding the surface (e.g. with 150-grit sandpaper).
- Stir HYDROIL ESTERNO thoroughly before use.
- The product is generally applied in two coats using a brush or a short-pile roller, ensuring even coverage of the wood surface.
- Apply the second coat as soon as the first coat is dry.
- Sanding between coats is not necessary unless the wood fibres have been raised. In this case, lightly sand the surface with 150-grit sandpaper before applying the next coat.
It generally dries within 30–60 minutes.
Apply the product on days that are not excessively windy or hot, and avoid direct sunlight to prevent it from drying too quickly.
YIELD
Coverage depends on the absorbency of the wood:
- Low-absorbency wood: 1 L / 10–15 m²
- High-absorbency wood: 1 L / 7–10 m²

Can HYDROIL ESTERNO be applied to oiled or varnished wood?
No. HYDROIL ESTERNO should only be applied to untreated wood or to surfaces previously treated with HYDROIL ESTERNO.

Is the product pigmented?
Yes. HYDROIL ESTERNO is lightly pigmented with a chestnut tint, which improves the durability of the treatment and enhances its resistance to UV light.
Why is it recommended to apply BARRIER after HYDROIL ESTERNO?
BARRIER is a protective finishing treatment that provides an additional water-repellent layer, enhances UV protection, and helps preserve the HYDROIL ESTERNO base treatment. For best results, it is recommended to apply BARRIER once or twice a year to extend the life of the treatment.
