Cleaning external floors: the five most frequent cases

21 March 2023

Greetings to all from your Nicola who returns on these virtual pages to give you advice based on the most frequently asked questions that you ask me.

This time we talk about the cleaning of external floors that can be victims of scale, algae, mold, weather events but also oil or rust stains.

So let’s see together the 5 most frequent cases in which the external floors, in cotto and stone, need to be cleaned up and what are the specific products to use to achieve a result to perfection.

How to remove moss from the external floor

The first case that I bring to your attention is the dirty floor of scale, algae and mold, which sees the formation of a black patina, the solution of which lies in the ALGANET stain remover and in the MARBEC BROWN PAD.

As mentioned, ALGANET is a stain remover, specific for stone materials, able to clean the external floors, sanitize and promote the removal of algae residues, mosses and incrustations of organic origin.

To use it simply dissolve in a plastic bucket (clean) 800 grams of product in ten liters of water, mixing everything for a few minutes, and then apply the solution obtained with a brush, a sponge, a soft cloth or a broom, on the surface.

At this point it should be thoroughly wet the area to be treated, rubbing the product with the BROWN BUFFER, leaving it to act for a variable time between 12 and 24 hours and finally rinsing with a water solution and ECOMARBEC, diluted to 30/50%.

In case of particularly encrusted surfaces the advice is to carry out a preliminary wash with water and BROWN BUFFER, to be used also during the final rinse.

When the surface is a victim of water

In the event that instead on the outside floor there is a patina of limestone and earth due to the stagnation of water and earthy rainwater, the advice is always to use the BROWN BUFFER, but this time combined with DELICACID.

DELICACID is a buffered acid, a specific detergent for the removal of cement grouts, as well as efflorescence and limestone scale, to be diluted in water (from 50 to 100 cc of product in 1 liter of water, in this case), then spread it on the surface and let it act a few minutes.

At this point it is enough to rub our external floor with the BROWN PAD, repeating the washing if necessary and always rinsing with plenty of water.

How to remove food oil stains from external floors

With the arrival of spring, with the increasingly beautiful and longer days, there will be opportunities to make dinners outside, maybe turning on the barbecue. In these situations, however, it can happen that the external floor becomes dirty with food oil stains and for this reason you have to run for cover with the right product.

In this case it is advisable to use the TIXO stain remover, specifically to eliminate oil and grease stains of natural origin from materials such as cement, ceramic, cotto, stone and porcelain tiles, to be applied with a spatula on the stain to be removed.

Once this wrap is dry you can then proceed to its dry removal with a nylon brush, then rinse with DELICACID and UNIPUL and then repeat the application if necessary.

Removing oil stains from candle waxes

If oil stains are caused by candle wax, we recommend SOLVOSILL, stain remover to be mixed well until a fluid paste is formed, to be applied on the stained surface, allowing it to dry for a variable time between 12 and 24 hours.

At that point you should rinse, as in the case of TIXO, with an acid solution of DELICACID or UNIPUL, reapplying the product several times if necessary.

How to remove rust stains from external floors

Finally, if you have to remove, from the external floors, the rust stains due to rusty objects or ferrous fertilizers, the product I suggest is TOGLIRUGGINE LIQUIDO.

This product is applied with a brush, on the stain to be removed, then rubbing the surface with sponges or with a BLUE BUFFER and then leaving it to act until the extraction of rust.

At this point, or when the product has taken on the purple color, you can remove it, within 10-15 minutes, rinsing with the degreasing detergent SGRISER diluted to 10% in water.

These are the 5 most common cases when talking about external floors to clean and I hope I have answered your questions on the subject.

By applying the right specific products and following the correct steps, there is no surface that cannot shine again.

Greetings and see you soon from your Nicola!

29 May 2026 Oak Parquet Restoration in Italy: Post-Construction Intervention by EASY PARKET
Can an oak parquet floor stained by moisture and construction residue be restored without sanding? That was the challenge faced by EASY PARKET by Francesco Ghelardi during this project in Prato, Tuscany, Italy. The floor, installed throughout the bedrooms and hallway of a private home, showed dark stains caused by moisture trapped under a nylon covering during masonry work, together with typical post-construction dirt and residue. Thanks to a technical and conservative approach, the surface was restored without sanding. This choice preserved the original micro-bevel of the parquet and brought back the natural beauty of the wood.
