Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

After cleaning and organising every room in the house following our spring cleaning guide for indoor spaces, the feeling of freshness and order is truly satisfying. However, spring cleaning does not end indoors.

With the arrival of warmer weather, we naturally start using the outdoor areas of the home again. Terraces, balconies and gardens become perfect places to relax or spend time outside.

During winter, however, these surfaces are often neglected and exposed to rain, humidity and atmospheric dirt. For this reason, it is important to dedicate some time to cleaning outdoor spaces, preparing them properly for the new season.

In this guide we will see how to organise spring cleaning for outdoor areas, starting with floors, garden furniture and barbecues.

Key points of the article

  • Spring cleaning should also include terraces, balconies and gardens
  • Outdoor floors and stone surfaces can develop algae, moss and biological films
  • Outdoor wood requires specific cleaning and protection
  • Garden furniture and fabrics should be refreshed after winter
  • The barbecue should be cleaned before being used again

Spring cleaning outdoor spaces: where to start

Cleaning outdoor areas can seem more demanding than cleaning indoor rooms.

During winter, balconies and terraces tend to accumulate:

  • leaves
  • dust
  • organic residues
  • atmospheric dirt
  • algae and moss films

Cold temperatures, humidity and rain encourage the formation of biological deposits on outdoor surfaces, especially on stone, concrete and other mineral materials.

For this reason, spring cleaning outdoors requires extra attention and the use of products suitable for each surface.

Cleaning outdoor terrace and balcony floors is one of the first steps when preparing outdoor spaces for spring.

How to clean outdoor stone floors, terraces and balconies

The first step when cleaning outdoor flooring is to completely clear the surface.

Temporarily move:

  • pots and plants
  • garden furniture
  • tables and chairs
  • planters and decorative objects

Once the area is clear, you can begin cleaning.

1. Remove dirt and debris

Sweep the entire surface using a stiff outdoor broom to remove:

  • leaves
  • soil
  • dust
  • plant residues

Also clean nearby stairs, railings and walls close to the flooring.

2. Wash the surface

After sweeping, rinse the floor with water to remove superficial dirt.

Once the surface dries, it becomes easier to identify biological stains or encrustations.

3. Remove algae and moss

To remove biological films caused by algae, moss and organic residues, you can use ALGANET®, a concentrated detergent with strong cleaning and sanitising power.

This product is particularly suitable for outdoor stone surfaces and natural materials, where biological growth often develops more easily.

4. Protect the outdoor flooring

After cleaning, it is important to protect the surface from moisture.

To reduce water absorption and protect the floor, you can apply IDROWIP®, a moisture-repellent protector designed for absorbent stone materials.

For longer-lasting protection, you can also apply PAV05, a protective anti-vegetative finish that helps reduce the return of algae on outdoor surfaces.

How to clean and treat outdoor wood

Many terraces and gardens include wooden floors or furniture. Wood is beautiful but also delicate.

During winter, outdoor wood may develop:

  • discoloration
  • greying
  • algae formation
  • humidity stains

For this reason, spring cleaning of outdoor wood should include both cleaning and protective treatment.

1. Clean the surface

First sweep the surface following the direction of the wood grain, removing accumulated debris and organic residues.

2. Remove stains and biological films

If the wood appears dull or stained by weathering, you can use SMACCHIO LEGNO, a specific cleaner designed to remove ageing films, algae and mould.

3. Restore wood protection

After cleaning, it is recommended to apply OLIO41, an oil-wax impregnating treatment that protects wood and preserves its natural beauty.

This treatment creates a water- and oil-repellent barrier, helping prevent ageing and greying.

4. Protect the wood over time

To improve durability, you can apply BARRIER, a protective product that helps shield wood from dirt and weathering.

For wooden garden furniture, such as gazebos, deck chairs and sun loungers, you can also apply a revitalising treatment using FLUOIL, a product that nourishes wood and enhances its natural appearance.

Cleaning garden furniture and fabrics

With the arrival of spring, outdoor furniture becomes central again.

After months of inactivity, garden cushions and fabrics often need refreshing.

To remove dirt and stains from fabrics you can use PULI TEX, a spray stain remover that helps quickly clean upholstery and textile surfaces.

This makes it easier to prepare deck chairs, armchairs and outdoor cushions for the new season.

How to clean the barbecue grill

Spring is also the perfect time to start using the barbecue again.

Before lighting the grill, it is always best to carry out a thorough cleaning to remove carbonised residues and accumulated grease.

For cleaning the grill and barbecue surfaces you can use:

  • PULIFORNO®, a strong gel descaler for carbonised residues
  • PULIFUMO®, a ready-to-use degreaser for soot and greasy deposits

These products help remove combustion residues easily and prepare the barbecue for the first grills of the season. For a more practical solution, we also offer a complete oven and barbecue cleaning kit.

Terraces, balconies and gardens can once again become welcoming spaces where you can relax, spend time outdoors and enjoy the warm season.

With proper organisation and the right products for each surface, spring cleaning of outdoor spaces becomes easier and more effective, helping keep terraces and gardens clean and protected for longer.
